Design & Play
General overview of Publishing Deal for Malaysia Boardgame Design‘s Design & Play competition.
As part of our commitment to help support the growth of the boardgame industry in Malaysia, Roll Rebellion will be supporting the competition by offering a publishing deal in which we contribute both in prize-money as well as a small publishing deal in which we will commit up to RM5,000/- based on the manufacturing costs with royalties going to the AUTHOR (winner of the competition).
So Roll Rebellion will handle the following.

Winning designs that accept the Publishing Contract, will go through a review and discussion process to discuss terms and any changes to explore to better market the product.
Production of art, and additional costs will be borne by Roll Rebellion which includes copywriting, rule-sheet writing, illustrations and graphic design.
The game will then undergo a play-test process again with different sample groups to better understand the product.
The game will then be manufactured through our printers and prepared for retail distribution which will be all handles by Roll Rebellion.
GENERAL TERMS
There will be a more detailed contract but some of the more general terms would be;
- AUTHORs will receive royalty payments of 10% of retail price which is payable on a quarterly basis. (if the game retails for RM100, AUTHORs will receive RM10. The rest will be used to cover development fees, taxes, shipping fees, platform fees, retail fees, discounts and returns.
- AUTHORs will be given a few complimentary sets, but will have the rights to purchase copies at a fixed discount for own sales at events and roadshows.
- There will be discussions on the game mechanics, title, and visual representation of the game and will require consensus from both the AUTHOR and PUBLISHER before proceeding. This is so we, as the publisher can maximize the chances of the product doing well on shelves.
As the competition terms limit the initial print-run, we may also offer more longer term contracts upon completion of the first print-run.
But as always, good luck with the competition and have fun making games!
